Riposte
Raise the shield, hold the line, and let their own fury be their undoing.
Riposte is a signature defensive skill belonging to the Crusader, one of the four original hero classes in Darkest Dungeon. It embodies the class's core identity: a stalwart shield-bearer who turns the enemy's aggression back upon itself. Rather than simply blocking a blow, the Crusader plants their feet, raises their battered shield, and waits—trusting that the moment an enemy lunges, the steel will answer with a punishing counter-stroke.
In the grim calculus of dungeon combat, Riposte represents the Crusader's most reactive and tactically flexible tool. It rewards players who understand timing and positioning, turning a would-be hit into a free attack while the rest of the party recovers or presses the offensive.

Lore & Background
In the garrison halls beneath the Manor, old veterans still speak of the Crusader's creed: never yield ground, never meet a blade with a blade, but with the flat of the shield and the edge of the counter. Riposte was not invented in a single battle; it was refined over generations of desperate holds where a single hero stood between a wave of the damned and the crumbling world behind them. The technique is deceptively simple in theory—plant, brace, wait, strike—but in the flickering torchlight of a cursed crypt, a half-second's hesitation means a broken rib or a severed arm.
The skill carries a quiet, almost monkish discipline. The Crusader does not rage or shout. They lower their center, angle the shield to catch the incoming swing, and in the same breath drive the pommel or the guard-bar into the attacker's throat. It is a skill of patience rewarded, of calm forged from years of watching companions fall because they swung a moment too early.
Among the other heroes, the Riposte is a comfort. The Man-at-Arms knows his Crusader will not break. The Plague Doctor knows the line will hold long enough for her to finish her incantation. In a world where every dungeon is a slow, grinding descent into madness, Riposte is the small, steady promise that the wall will not fall—not today, not on this watch.
In Their Own Story
The corridor smelled of old blood and wet stone. Three of the things shuffling out of the dark had already taken the Man-at-Arms's left arm, and the Plague Doctor was muttering her healing prayers with shaking lips. The Crusader stepped forward, planted her boots in the grit, and raised the great tower shield until it swallowed the torchlight. She breathed in. Held. The first creature lunged, claws raking—
The shield caught the strike with a sound like a bell struck underwater. The Crusader did not flinch. Her elbow drove back, the pommel finding the creature's jaw with a wet crack, and it folded. The second one came. The third. Each was met the same way: brace, absorb, answer. The shield sang. The Crusader's arms trembled but did not waver. Behind her, the Man-at-Arms dragged himself to his feet, and the Plague Doctor's hands stilled.
The corridor was quiet again. The Crusader lowered the shield a fraction, exhaled, and said nothing. There was no need.
Reader's Guide
Riposte is the Crusader's reactive defensive skill. It costs 2 AP and grants the Crusader a Riposte buff for the remainder of the round. While the buff is active, the Crusader gains a block value that absorbs incoming physical damage. If the Crusader is hit by an enemy attack while Riposte is active, they immediately deal a counter-attack against the attacker and the buff is consumed.
Synergy within the Crusader kit is strong. Pairing Riposte with Shield Wall in the same round layers additional block, making the Crusader a near-impenetrable wall for one exchange. Rally can be used on the following turn to restore stress and morale after the round's combat, keeping the Crusader in a healthy state for the next engagement. Shield Bash remains your primary offensive tool; use Riposte to survive the enemy's turn and then punish with a full-damage bash on your next.
Positioning matters. Place the Crusader in the back row to reduce the chance of being targeted, but remember that Riposte's counter only triggers if they ARE hit. In practice, the skill shines most when the enemy has high attack ratings and you need to convert their aggression into free damage for your party.
Did You Know?
- Riposte is one of only a handful of skills in Darkest Dungeon that converts an enemy's attack into a free counter-strike, making it uniquely reactive compared to pure block skills.
- The Crusader's entire kit is built around the theme of holding the line and punishing overextension, with Riposte serving as the philosophical and mechanical centerpiece of that identity.
- Because Riposte's counter-attack triggers only when the Crusader is actually hit, it can be completely nullified by enemies with high dodge or by allies who block the attack for the Crusader—making positioning and team c
- The skill's reactive nature makes it a favorite in speedruns and low-level challenges, where a single well-timed Riposte can save a hero from what would otherwise be a lethal hit.
