Backstab

A blade in the dark, delivered only when you dare to stand last.

Backstab is a position-based attack skill exclusive to the Vagabond, the game's first and most iconic melee class. It is a single-target damage skill that only becomes available when the Vagabond occupies the rear slot (position 4) of the party, embodying the class's theme of a scrappy, opportunistic swordsman who strikes when the moment demands a blade in the dark.

As one of the Vagabond's three dedicated position skills, Backstab rewards players who manage their hero's placement deliberately. It transforms the Vagabond from a straightforward frontline brawler into a back-line assassin, adding a tactical layer to an otherwise straightforward damage dealer.

Lore & Background

In the grim corridors of the Darkest Dungeon, the Vagabond is not a knight in shining mail but a weathered drifter with a chipped sword and a price to name. Backstab speaks to the reality of such a fighter: there is no honor in a fair exchange when the walls are closing in and the things in the dark are far stronger than any human arm. You wait. You shuffle to the back. And when the beast lunges past you, your edge finds the gap in its hide.

The skill's restriction to the rear position is not a mere mechanical quirk but a narrative one. The Vagabond's entire kit is built around the idea of a lone survivor who cannot afford to be where the danger is thickest. Riposte from the front, Cleave across the middle, and Backstab from behind—three facets of a fighter who reads the room and strikes where the enemy is least armored. It is the philosophy of the desperate: you do not win the fight; you win the one moment where you are not being killed.

Fans often note that the Vagabond, as the first class encountered, sets the tonal template for the entire roster. Backstab, in particular, introduces the position mechanic in a way that feels instinctive: you pull your hero to the back, the skill glows, and the reward is a satisfying, heavy hit that reminds you why you took the risk.

In Their Own Story

The torch sputtered. Somewhere ahead, the thing that had been breathing in the dark for three rooms shifted its weight, and the Vagabond felt the floor tremble beneath his boots. He did not raise his sword. He did not brace. He simply stepped backward—past the Hellion, past the Plague Doctor, until he was last, until the stench of the beast was a wall of hot rot against his spine. The Hellion roared and charged. The Vagabond waited. And in the half-second the creature's horn passed his shoulder, he turned, and the edge of his chipped blade found the soft place beneath the jaw. The thing shrieked. The torch went out. In the absolute dark, the Vagabond exhaled, and the blade dripped onto the flagstones.

Reader's Guide

Backstab is a Position-type skill that requires the Vagabond to be in slot 4. When the condition is met, it deals a large single-target damage hit to one enemy. It costs a moderate amount of stress to activate, so using it repeatedly in a single encounter will tax the Vagabond's mental stability.

The key to making Backstab work is the Swap action. Every hero has a basic Swap that lets you exchange positions with a party member, so a common rhythm is: Vagabond in slot 1 or 2 for Cleave or Riposte, then Swap to slot 4 when a high-value target (a boss, a healer, a heavy-hitter) is in range and Backstab is the better answer.

Synergy within the Vagabond kit: pair Backstab with Frenzy for a two-hit burst when you can afford the stress, or follow a Riposte with a Swap and Backstab to punish a single target twice in one turn. Outside the kit, a Plague Doctor's DoT or a Man-at-Arms' taunt can keep the enemy's attention forward while the Vagabond repositions and stabs.

Practical tip: because the skill is locked to one slot, avoid building a party where the Vagabond is permanently stuck in the front. A two-melee, two-ranged layout gives you the flexibility to shuffle the Vagabond into position 4 without sacrificing your primary damage source.
