Flame Burst

Faith made incandescent—every foe in the chamber pays the price.

Flame Burst is a holy-fire area attack in Darkest Dungeon, available to the Crusader. It represents the raw, searing conviction of the Order's warriors channeled into a devastating burst of sacred flame that engulfs every enemy in the chamber. As one of the Crusader's more aggressive options, it shifts the class's role from patient tanking to punishing retaliation, reminding the dungeon's horrors that faith burns as hot as any infernal magic.

In the rhythm of a Darkest Dungeon run, Flame Burst serves as a pressure valve: after absorbing hits behind Bulwark or Shield Bash, the Crusader unleashes a wide, punishing strike that can turn a desperate moment into a turning point. Its area nature makes it especially valuable against the swarming, multi-enemy encounters that define the deeper floors.

Lore & Background

The Order of the Crusader was forged in the fires of the First Schism, when the Temple's theologians declared that the very air could be weaponized for the righteous. Flame Burst is not mere combustion; it is the crystallized will of generations of knights who swore that no shadow would pass their line. The holy oil mixed into the Crusader's sigils ignites on command, and the resulting burst is said to carry the whispered prayers of every fallen brother and sister in the Order's long history.

Monks in the Temple's scriptorium describe the moment of activation as a 'second sunrise'—a brief, violent dawn that paints the dungeon walls in gold and orange before the smoke clears. Enemies caught in the radius report (in the rare cases they survive to speak) a sensation of being unmade at the soul, as though their very shadow was cauterized away. The stress cost to the Crusader is not trivial; channeling such conviction while the darkness presses in takes a toll on the mind, and many a veteran Crusader has seen their stress spike sharply after a particularly desperate Flame Burst.

The skill's area nature reflects the Order's doctrine: no single monster is the true enemy. The dungeon itself, the creeping dark, the swarm of things that slither from the walls—all of it is the adversary, and Flame Burst is the Crusader's answer to the idea that you must fight one at a time. You do not. You burn the room.

In Their Own Story

The torchlight guttered. Three of them—pale, lanky things with too many joints—had closed the distance while the Vestal fumbled for her vials. The Crusader felt the familiar cold crawl up his forearms, the dungeon's malice pressing against his ribs like a hand.

He did not pray. Praying was for the ones who still had the luxury of time.

He raised his gauntlet, and the sigils along his knuckles flared white-hot. The holy oil in his veins ignited, and the world went gold. The burst rolled outward in a low, roaring wave, and the three things simply... were not there anymore. Ash. A faint smell of ozone and old incense. The walls were painted in the afterglow, and the Crusader's stress meter climbed like a tide he could not stop.

Behind him, the Vestal exhaled. 'Again,' she whispered, and he nodded, already reaching for his shield. The dungeon was still breathing. It always was.

Reader's Guide

Flame Burst is a Crusader area attack that deals holy-element damage to every enemy in the chamber. It carries a moderate stress cost, so it is best used when you can afford the mental toll—ideally after a defensive turn or when the party's stress is manageable. Because it hits all enemies, it is a strong answer to multi-enemy rooms, particularly in the Mine, the Ruins, and the later floors of the Crossroads where groups of three or more are common.

Synergy within the Crusader kit: pair Flame Burst with Bulwark or Shield Bash on the preceding turn to absorb the initial hit, then unleash the burst as a counter. The Crusader's healing options (Holy Light) let you recover from the stress spike afterward. In a party, having a Plague Doctor or Highwayman apply a damage buff (such as a poison or bleed) before the Crusader's area hit amplifies the total damage dealt across the room.

Position flexibility means you can use Flame Burst from the back line without repositioning, making it a reliable option when your front-line allies are downed or stunned. Upgrade the skill to increase its damage scaling, which becomes critical in the later dungeons where single-target hits may no longer be enough to clear a room efficiently.
